Roughly 62,000 pounds of fentanyl smuggled into California was confiscated by authorities in 2023. The total amount of the potent synthetic opioid seized last year “is enough to potentially kill the global population nearly twice over,” Gov. Gavin Newsom’s office announced Tuesday.

Proposition 47 was passed by California voters in November 2014. It changed certain low-level crimes from potential felonies to misdemeanors and also allowed for people previously convicted of felonies to be reclassified, in some cases, as misdemeanors. In addition, money from having fewer people incarcerated went toward treatment programs and victim services.


California rates of violent crime, property crime increased

The report shows California's violent crime rate increased 6.1% since 2021. The property crime rate was up 6.2%. The homicide rate dipped, decreasing 5%. But the robberies rate jumped by 10.2%.


Some worry California proposition to tackle homelessness would worsen the problem

Newsom wants to give the state more control over how that money is spent. Proposition 1, before voters on the March 5 ballot, would require counties to spend 60% of those funds on housing and programs for homeless people with serious mental illnesses or substance abuse problems.


Theft and drug crackdown? Proposed measure to reform Prop 47 gathers last signatures for November ballot

It wasn't on the primary election ballot Super Tuesday, but a measure looking to crack down on crime likely will go before California voters in the November general election.

It's a bipartisan push to reform Proposition 47 that organizers say is gaining more momentum by the minute. The measure is called The Homelessness, Drug Addiction, and Theft Reduction Act.

"It is not a blue or a red issue. It's a Californian issue," Greg Totten said. "Here in California, the public is at a tipping point."
